ADVICE TO FUTURE HIGH SCHOOL DRUMLINE LEADERSHIP

Focus on what you can control, and don’t worry about things you can’t control. Bad attitudes, lack of facilities, under-qualified teachers, those are all in the category of things you can’t control. So don’t focus on those. Instead focus on what you CAN control which is yourself.

Be A Great Role Model
Show up and do your best, help others, be kind, be able to go from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm, focus on your responsibilities, be a great communicator, know your music, strive for greatness, be a role model, be positive, and don’t let negativity get you down. When others go low, you go high.

Live a holistic lifestyle of greatness
Everything you do from when you get up in the morning to when you go to be bed at night should be done with greatness in mind. And eventually that greatness will inspire great actions from your peers.

Most band programs are not run like a drumcorps
So don’t put your expectations in an unrealistic place. Some people in high school marching band are hobbyists and aren’t there to be the best. But maybe, over time, through your positive influence you can shift the culture to something better. But know it will take time. You have to cultivate it, grow it, and be patient. Remember that a tree only grows as fast as a tree grows. Getting mad it’s not growing faster will only upset you.

Focus on self betterment. The better you are the better you can help others
Stay focused, work on perfecting your craft, learn from outside elements like Vic Firth and Gridbook, take private lessons, read books, and eventually you will find yourself not only in a happier place in life, but in a better position to help others.

Hope this helps! Stay positive, and keep going! And who knows, with enough effort in the right direction you could have the power to make a positive impact on the season. And your peers may surprise you.
