Fundamentals are the key to success. BUT WHY?⠀
Every piece of music you play can be broken down into smaller parts. These smaller parts are the foundation where all other music is developed. If you want to perform a paradiddle, you don't just start playing R L R R L R L L sticking and hope it will magically be amazing. You start by understanding stroke types and how they work together to perform two heights. Then, you follow an additive process to eventually end with a paradiddle. ⠀
And this process is seen everywhere. There is a "skeleton" to every advanced piece of music and developing the appropriate fundamentals for the music you're playing is what will make EVERYTHING you play better.⠀
